Instagram DM rules for businesses in 2026: the 24-hour window, Human Agent and retired tags

When can a business message someone on Instagram, how long the reply window lasts, which message tags still work after April 2026, and how to stay on the right side of Meta’s policy.

Instagram is a customer-first channel: a business can’t start a DM conversation through the API. Everything begins with the customer — a message, a story reply, a tap on an ad or an ig.me link. From there, Meta’s messaging policy decides how long you have to answer.

The standard window: 24 hours

After a customer’s message, you can send any reply — including offers — for 24 hours. Each new message from the customer restarts the clock. Once the window closes, ordinary sends fail with a “messaging window closed” error until the customer writes again.

Human Agent: up to 7 days, for people only

  • Lets a human agent reply for up to 7 days after the customer’s last message, for issues that can’t be solved within 24 hours.
  • Requires the Human Agent permission through Meta’s App Review.
  • Not for automated messages and not for promotions — use it for support follow-ups like “your replacement has shipped”.

Three message tags were retired

From April 27, 2026, the CONFIRMED_EVENT_UPDATE, ACCOUNT_UPDATE and POST_PURCHASE_UPDATE tags return error 100. If your automations used them for booking reminders or order updates on Instagram, those messages now fail. Plan reminders inside the open window, or move them to a channel with approved templates such as WhatsApp.

Private replies to comments

You can answer a public comment with one private DM, sent within 7 days of the comment. If the customer replies, it becomes a normal conversation with the usual 24-hour window. It’s the official way to run “comment PRICE and we’ll DM you” campaigns.

Conversations that start from ads

Click-to-Instagram ads have their own rules for how long the receiving app controls the thread, and industry reports describe longer reply windows for ad-started conversations from late 2026. Check the current policy for your ad setup before you rely on a longer window — the safe default is still 24 hours.

Breaking the rules has consequences

Misusing tags or messaging outside the window can get your ability to send messages restricted. Meta posts notices to the Page Support Inbox — make sure someone reads it.

How ThreadWave helps you stay compliant

  • The composer shows whether the window is open and tells you when replies are blocked.
  • Human Agent tagging can be switched on once Meta approves it for your app.
  • Every Instagram conversation shows the customer’s last message time, so nothing quietly expires.
